Add 3 cars and it gets serious.

Oddly enough though, all BMWs post 1986 are listed here as being
    okay up to E10 ...

If a manufacturer sends a service depot (like ours) a bulletin stating
'do not use more than X% ethanol blended fuels' in vehicle Y (which
several manufacturers have done then does that not constitute
'knowledge' of the existence of a problematic interaction between a
certain vehicle and a certain fuel mix?

I have used both Shell 95 (not 96) and Optimax 98 in my BMW R1100RT.

Using 95 I found that the bike had a little less power, and would lug
more than I liked. Plus it was definitely less smooth.

Back on the Optimax and it was smooth and happy again.

An no, Optimax did not bugger up the plugs, or anything else. Been on
Optimax since I got the bike 5 years ago.

You oughta add up the total of CTP premiums you're paying! But then
    maybe not.

It's not just power, either. My old Mazda MX6 used to get a good 50 -
100 more k's using "premium" (just 96 RON back then I think) vs
"regular" - and it came with no recommendation to prefer premium when
    filling up.

My '05 Sprint also gets 20 - 30 km more out of a tank of premium and
the engine feels much smoother using it - can't say it feels any more
powerful, though. I haven't been able to measure (or feel) any
difference between 96 and 98 RON premium, though.

With modern EFI vehicles, it all comes down to how good the engine's
management system is - if the little man inside is clever enough, you
get a benefit from the extra octane - but there's no way to find out
    without actually testing.

Marketing. It wasn't pulled, it was renamed. Shell have called their
98-octane (or whatever it ends up being according to the measurement
standards used in a particular market) fuel V-power in the UK, at least,
    for years.

Well I'm not, so I'm hoping that there's one around who can tell me
what it is about this "Opal" petrol that makes it "unsniffable"? And
is it equivalent to plain old ULP?
