Is there a major difference in performance ? My bike is recommended 98 but
quite a few service stations dont offer 98.

Also I remember the tales of woe about Shell Ultramax ( or whatever it was
called ) and I see they have a new high octane brand out there and was
wondering if its still the same or is ok to use ?

While riding locally I have no probs but when touring around it may be
    different.

Now I new someone would say that and thats why I didnt ask the difference
between 96 & 98 but asked about the performance :)

Boags? they make a beer (real one)?

Would the difference between 96 and 98 be much in normal day to day
    usage???

    I wouldn't thought so

    What type of bike?

The greatest problem with fuel I have at the moment is it going off in the
tank. With 5 bikes in the garage at the moment I rarely have the opportunity
to ride them all weekly and I am finding rough running when I do use them.

if your bike is tuned for 98 you will notice a difference in responsive.

OPtimax issues are an urban myth. Maybe tended to stuff up bikes that had
bad issues to start with...the additives cleaned out the gunk and shifted it
    elsewhere.

Nice stuff, never had an issue.

The "new" optimax has some extra junk...Shell are sponsoring Ducati to run
    with it.

Using lower density stuff than optimax..you will notice it...

far from urban myth , in many bikes it causes probs esp carb bikes

fact also is the fuel goes 'off' quite quickly
    yes Junk

I saw a top gear review on fuel in cars.. In normal road cars it made a tiny
difference but in a high performance car engines like an evo or WRX they got
an extra 10 pony's + outa the motor.

So yes it does make a difference in high performance engines like in a
bike.. but as for bike stats , I dunno,

Geez, first it was "it'll crystalise in yer tank"

    Then "it'll rot yer rubber"

    Now "Bust yer plastics".

Tell me how, or at least the "type" of plastic that is so harshly affected
    by EtOH.

Why did it get pulled if there was naught wrong?
    Nice? They're biscuits, yeah?
    Surely riding would be beneficial?
How will the density of the fuel affect my bike?

I know my old bikes run badly on it. But manged OK on the other
brands' high octane stuff. BP seemed to be best.

from what i was told by a guy that did a lot of fuel testing

the shell has a lot of additives to get that 98 and hence why it goes off
    quickly

the BP is the only one that gains its octane by being refined

personally i tried all the fuels in the co car and the bp gave the best
    improvements
    and consistant results

Buggered if I know, I have absolutely no issues with using ethanol, a
bit like LPG it works better in engines tuned for it though. There
however has been reporting in semi-reputable publications that issues
have been reported that are being blamed on it. A number of European
car manufacturers' distributors are on record as saying "any evidence
of ethanol usage voids your warranty", probably wouldn't do them any
    good under the TPA anyway.

If you reckon that's wrong - cool - like I said, seek advice from the
manufacturer. If they're going to void your warranty for using it then
you want to make that choice with your eyes open.

    Wow!

A new chemical! Or did you mean ethanoic acid? I guess eating your fish
and chips on the tank is a problem.

Would you agree that has more to do with too many variables in the equation,
    rather that with the Ethanol?
Nah, I reckon it's bad to state that it will do something with out knowing
    it does.

Interesting..... I wonder what wee little Johnnie thinks about this as he is
promoting it ( well when the prices were sky high he was ) as a viable
    alternative.

    From the K1200R Manual

    Recommended 98 ROZ/RON

95 Roz/Ron - usable with power and consumption
    related restrictions

Its a pity that it doesnt say anything about what these restrictions are
