93 katana 750 running like doodoo

It's been idling poorly and running warm (i think) for a while then it
started not idling at all after it warmed up.

I set the valves (.004 and .005 per the local suzuki guy, .001 tighter
then the book stated). The valve clatter quieted down a lot but now
it's even less likely to idle and today during mild acceleration,
power cut completely at about 5k-6k rpm and it backfired then power
picked up where it left off.

I cleaned out the carbs and replaced some o-rings last summer but
    never sync'd them.

I queried the local suzuki guy about the rough/no idle and he said
    sync the carbs.

    Just looking for confirmation/general thoughts....

Also, anyone know where I can find a hose diagram? The klymer book
    is, uh, lacking.

    TIA,
    Rusty

Well.. I just did a top end job on my honda 750..... put it all back
together, and the thing started right up, but it had no power, in fact I
needed to keep the choke on to keep it running a little smoother.... well
after all is said and done, I rebuilt the carbs, and synchronized them...
thing runs like it was new now........

    good luck..

    Many thanks Fwed,

    Another goofy question.

I mentioned that i'd cleaned the carbs out. I didn't really RTFM
before I did so (no, I'm not too bright).

In trying to trouble shoot the current problem the klymer book
mentioned that the mixture screws are set at the factory and can't be
adjusted and to put them back in the number of turns that they came
    out on.

How the heck does one go about adjusting the mixture?

    (these are Mikumi carbs)

    a) Run the mixture screws all the way in
    b) back them out one turn
    c) If it wont run back them out by quarter turns till it does run
    d) Sync the carbs
    e) turn the idle all the way down, then back it out one turn
    f) tweak the mixture till the idle speed is normal
    g) sync the carbs again

    ?

At least, that's how I'd do it on a holley 4 bbl (sans the syncing of
    course).

    Thanks again,
    Rusty

  5. can't help ya on the hose diagram, but if you tell me what you are
needing specifically i have a 93 katana 750 that came from the
original owner with only 3300 miles....it is *all* original....i can
take digital pics if i have a couple days to get them posted(puter is
old as dirt and have to load pics from camera at friends
    house...<sigh>)
JT(reply here if you need help, email given is bogus)

  6. Kaybearjr, not to highjack Rusty's thread, but ihave a question that
you seem well qualified to answer....i also have a 750 katana(93 model
also) and i have what i believe may be a dirty carb problem...the bike
was bought by me from the original owner (*in feb of this year) with
only 3300 miles on the odo....it has litterally spent its life in a
garage under cover...well it starts and idles great....it runs good
to...BUT(isn't there always one?) when cruising at a steady speed, say
around 5000rpms on highway, when i need to give it some throtle it
wants to momentarily "bog" then it goes...and goes well if it is realy
cracked open...but the bog is very irritating and surely not the way
it should be...not being really familiar with Mikuni carbs i dont'
even know what they use for an enrichment circuit for when the
throttle is suddenly opened, so i am kinda in a "spot" so to speak...i
have run a few tanks of fuel through with "seafoam" added to help
clean out the carbs....it has helped alot...no rough running or rough
idleing, but that momentary bog when i crack on it is still
there....if i keep the rpm's up pretty well it is not noticable....can
you possibly lead me in a direction? i have alot of experience working
on cars and trucks but MUCH less on two wheelers....

Good info Kaybear. Thank you. If the mixture screws are under caps
then it's unlikely I touched 'em last time. I'll try syncing the
carbs and if that doesn't work then i guess remove, rebuild etc.

    Thanks again. Gotta love newsgroups!

  8. this bike has everything as it was from the factory...it has two
    pipes..so i guess it is a 2into one two times...heh..

while i understand my old gsx750 by today's standards(and actually by
93 standards) isn't a true sportbike it is pretty dang fast for me...i
am used to old honda "cruiser" type bikes and this one is indeed fast
as i said, compared to what i am used to..it runs well, it is just a
bog when throttle positionis increased kinda suddenly...if i open it
steadily instead of cracking it, there is no hesitation...that is why
i asked about fuel enrichment...the original owner is somewhat a
"friend" of mine and he said it did *not* used to have the bog...i
assumed(yeah i know) it was probably varnish from the bike sitting
most of its life..as i said it had 3300 miles in 11 years, so it did
    indeed sit alot...

    <snip detailed description and procedures>

thanks for the detail and thorough explanation...i do appreciate it
and will definitely print it out....

  9. yes it does...four pipes come out of the heads then the two on the
left and the two on the right are linked by a small round "chamber"
that i assumed was somewhat of an "equilizer" type thing...(very
    technical i realize...heh)
i really need to check the airbox..heh....i bought this bike and have
not ridden it much...it ran well so i only did an oiland filter
change, and drained/flushed the fuel tank, then rode it...but i am a
subcontractor in the construction field so this time of the year i
have no time to ride....i will make it a point to check the airbox out
if for nothing else than to satisfy my curiosity that you have given
    me...heh
well i am definitely no 'boy racer' thats for sure...had a fellow take
a look at the bike and said "speedometer says 160, will it do
it?"...my response? "i'll never know"....hehe...i enjoy riding and
have for almost 15 years(hey im not that old..<G>), but i am no
racer....i honestly can say that i do not know if the bike will do
    more than 85 because i haven't tried...i feel confident it would(as i
said it does run and accelerate well), but i don't need to know....

Kaybearjr i thank you for your help and wisdom..

As long as you don't need a truck for hauling really big stuff, most hand
tools will fit in a trailer. :)

  12. i would absoulutely love it if it were so...but my aircompressor,
table saw, and miter saw are more than enough to fill the average
trailer for a two wheeler(and there is *way* more than that that i
carry and need on a daily basis), but i would love it if i could...heh

I saw a bike on TV that could pull that load. Had a Dodge V-10 for power.

I can, but with the price of gas these days, is it a wise thought? :)

  16. hmm...well with a "vehicle" such as the dodge MC or the boss hoss,
does gas prices even come into the equation?

That would be extremely cool but don't do it unless you just feel like
    pulling your fuel tank off.

I was hoping for the top end hoses between between carbs, fuel tank,
vents etc. I'm not certain mine are where they should be and suspect
it might be sucking air from one of them into the carbs.

The Klymer book says my carbs are Mikuni BST36SS. Anyone have a line
on a stock rebuild kit for these? I haven't had much luck, just
    finding misc parts.

No big jets for me, the bike goes faster than I need to already.
