916 vs Black lightning

    Watching[1] a Grand Designs on TV, where the guy has put a 916 on the
    wall of his living room. Nothing wrong with that, of course, and the
    presenter's question "but is it art?" has such an obvious answer it's
    not worth worrying about, but then I commented to Jude "well, of
    course it is; after all it's the most beautiful motorcycle ever
    built... apart from the Black Lightning, of course".

    Which lead me to wonder - are there any other genuine contenders for
    the award? Forget function, and obviously (IMO) forget any of the gash
    'custom' shit, i.e. only real production(-ish) bikes, ahich other
    bikes are really up there in the pure asethitic sense? What says the
    font?

    When I went to Croatia in 2005 a member of my touring party was on one
    of those. Apart from tightening up the bolts on the rear shocks at every
    coffee stop he didn't have any trouble. Quite amusing watch him do a
    full service on the Adriatic Coast. I kicked the tyres on my bike and
    slopped in 200ml of Castrol GTX.

    Wot I meant to type, of course.
    I don't get it. I mean, yes, it was/is iconic, and perhaps a classic
    '70s design, but pretty it ain't. Or, as I initially types, by ****
    it's ugly.
    Classic, yeah. You and WUN both cite it. It brings back memories for
    me, and I rode a couple (belonging to mates) but never owned one. I'm
    not sure, though, that it's right up there in the looks department.

    Never been a Honda fan. But the VF500f2 is, I think, one of the prettiest
    motorcycles that
    the Japanese have ever made. Particularly the red, white and black ones.
