I just bought this bike and It idles (badly) but wont run. If I try
to give it throttle it dies immediately and will only idle for a short
time before dying out. I assumed the carbs were shot so I tried to
bypass them for diagnostic purposes by sprating carb cleaner in the
intake and it didnt pep up at all. It has spark, I checked to see
that the coils were pulsing with my power probe and then checked each
plug to make sure they were all firing and they are which leads me to
believe this could be a compression issue. Am I missing something?
I've read a little bit about the cam chains going bad on these bikes
but I dont hear any hideous noises when it idles.... I'm an auto
tech but this is my first liquid cooled bike and I suspect someone
might have some input for me. Any help would be appreciated.

  2. I doubt that the carbs are "shot", as you put it. They are just
    plugged up internally.

Your motorcycle has diaphragm carbs that take control of the high
speed circuit away from the vagaries of the rider's frisky wrist.

The carbs were made this way to reduce air pollution.

The idle circuits have small idle jets, concealed idle mixture screws,
and very tiny idle ports and passages which are easily plugged up by
gum and varnish from evaporated gasoline.

Since I have run down how to clean out diaphragm carburetors a
bazillion times, I suggest that you google for EPA anti-tamper plugs
and transition ports and Berryman B12.

But if it were strictly a carb issue, wouldnt it pep up when I spray
carb cleaner or some other aerosol fuel into the air box?

Yes, probably......but all carb. cleaners are NOT good fuels.
Try ether starting fluid; then you will be proving something.

If the jets or passageways are blocked how will the carb cleaner get
through them to make it pep up?

I tried an ether based starter fluid, (thrust). The results seemed
inconclusive. that is, there was no appreciable change in throttle
response or idle. As I posted before, all plugs are firing. Im
performing a compression test this afternoon, which should at least
yield a more definite prognosis. If I have good compression there is
hope. If not.... There is less hope I guess.

Got it. the bike had a bad connection at the ecm. the wire that
grounds the 1 and 4 pulse coil. I was back probing it and the bitch
fired right up. What a great feeling.
