I have it on DVD, also the History of the Six Hour... quality isn't
wonderful since it was made from a 20yo tape, but it's quite watchable.

From memory the 1984 6 hour was the one that didn't HAVE an ending seeing as
it was stopped 6(?) minutes early so the ABC could show the podium before
    the golf telecast started.

Dunno why people consider this type of thing such a farce. F1 and
MotoGP (and probably WSBK I suspect) all have time limits built into the
rules which will terminate the race despite not all laps having been
completed. I have a vague recollection of a F1 race back in the 80s
being stopped after 2 hrs despite not all scheduled laps having been
    completed.

Err, Nev. F1 rules are that races shall be no more than 320 (?) kms or 2
hrs, whichever is the shorter. Monza never takes near 2 hours and Monaco is
always 2 hours. At Monaco they estimate the number of laps before the race
based on practice times. If it then rains on the day they will decide about
halfway through the race what the revised number of laps will be to stay
    under the 2 hour limit.

.... specially after the fuckin race has started, and teams have their
    plans already in action....

None of them should have it "built in", a race should go its length,
    **** TV.

Far out! You don't know a hellofalot about grid-iron, do you? Can you
comprehend that the network puts the ads in the breaks?

Yeah, but boffin sounds like someone with unkempt white hair and
    plastic-framed bifocals.

    Oops.

They don't schedule breaks in play in Grid-iron any more than AFL promotors
arrange for someone to take a mark in front of a specific fence
    advertisement.
When a play is completed in Grid-iron, because the ball is grounded or a
pass is not caught, the team with the ball has 40 seconds to put the ball
back in play or be penalised with a 'delay of game' penalty, 5 yards. How
much time they actually take is a strategic judgement made taking into
account the stage of the game, the time remaining in the half, and the
current score. The only longer times out of play is when a team calls a
time-out for whatever reason. Each team can call three 2 minute time-outs
per half and they don't use them up lightly. Time can also be used by the
referee to review a decision made by them. This time also has a limit.

Not schedule breaks, but they do sit and wait for "approval" from the
networks to play on.. Started in USA wiht the gridiron..

AFL Umpires are always lookin up at the wall for a light to go out so
they are "allowed" to bounce the ball and continue the game. thats why
they are always facing the wrong way when they come back from an ad
break :( Corp $ wins again, and now Ch10's breaks are 45 seconds
compared to the old 30second ones..

I don't think you read the rest of my post. In gridiron the ref does not
decide when play recommences. The quarterback with the ball does. He has a
limited time to restart play or get penalised, 40 seconds max, and how
quickly or slowly he restarts depends on whether the game clock is running
or stopped at the time, and the strategy of the game position.
