I have been restoring/resurecting an '83 Virago and am almost done but
tonight I ran into a problem; The engine runs pretty well.....until you put
it in gear. Then it dies immediately.

Unfortunately, I can't find my owners manual, which has the wiring
diagram.....we just moved you see and I still haven't sorted every thing out
    yet.

I am wondering if it has anything to do with the switch that won't allow
the bike to start unless its in neutral. I think this is just for engaging
the starter but I'm not certain.

Can anyone offer some good advice/help? It would be most appreciated.

  2. Yes, it is. It'll have a clutch/gear/sidestand interlock.

Got it. There was a break in the wiring for the kickstand switch.
Thanks for all of the help!

Can anyone shed some slight on what exactly this interrupt switch does?
Does it cut power to the coils?

  5. In essence, yes. It cuts the power to the low tension side of the
ignition circuit so no power gets fed to the coils, so no spark.
