Ok, as posted earlier, I've taken the carbs completely apart, reset the
floats and taken the pilot screws out and flushed their channels out. I
reset the pilot screws to 2.75 turns out per the manual. Now, as it
idles, I have the idle screw turned completely out (not touching). I
use the throttle to keep it idling, or else it will quit. I am trying
to set the main idle screw while holding the throttle so it will hold
the idle on its own. However, when I set the main idle screw, the
engine seems to rev up from my throttle idle of around 1000-1100 rpm to
around 4000 rpm. When I turn the main idle screw back, the engine
eventually comes back from being hung up, then dies. It seems to be an
all or nothing deal. I tried to turn the pilot screws in to about 1.5
turns out, still the same deal.

Does this mean another breakdown of the carbs to clean out something I
    missed? Any other explanations?

  2. OK, I explained that in my previous post. You still have the pilot
screws turned out too far. You have the throttle butterflies so far
open you're uncovering the transition ports, and the transition ports
are not controlled by the pilot screws. Maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of a turn
    would be right.
