82 GL500 Honda No Top End

  1. It's an older bike. My brother-in-law had it sitting in his garage for a
couple of years. Offered it to me to drive for the summer. Plenty of bottom
end -- real torquei in fact -- but a real dog on the top end. On the highway
it can barely do 100 kph maybe 110 with the wind in fourth. But if I drop
down into third and get the revs up over 8000 all of a sudden I can feel it
"grab" and take off, really take off toward the red line. Scared me
actually. Any idea as to where I should start looking. I've changed the
plugs to NKG as per the spec. I drained the tank and put in fresh gas. No
difference. Thx. Seems to do a little better when running hot, like 30 to 45
    minutes into driving.

  2. The more I read the more it looks like a classic stator/cdi problem.
Basically the bike kacs at around 4500 rpm. There are two circuits one for
the low end and one for the high end. I'm going to try by passing the
highend and tieing it into the low-end to see if it makes a difference.

  3. Well shame on me. I don't have a CDI ignition, I have a Transistor ignition.
The problem turned out to be the carburetors. Once I took them off and
cleaned the jets and reassembled the whole thing my problem went away. The
bike goes like a rocket now. I should have known it was starved for fuel.

  4. You were correct. Gooie carbs. They didn't even look very bad, but what a
    difference.
