It's very different when you're dealing with enthusiasts, which most
motorcyclists are. I expect the person behind the counter to be as clued
up about what they're selling as me. You only get that level of
knowledge through using the things you sell.

It's generally the way things are. I don't know that many people working
in the trade who don't ride.

  6. Yeah, but I'm with Lozzo on this. Enthusiastic bikers make for nicer
shops. Unfortunately, they don't always make for better businesspeople.
Their enthusiasm can cloud their judgment.

the old "takes one to know one argument".

I'm sure she's a lovely person, and clearly a Driving God; I was just
making the observation that those things wouldn't make me be "in love
    with her".

    But, sure, **** objectivity.

In software, most enthusiasts are actually fucking annoying hobbyist
geeks, the kind you don't want to be working with 95% of the time.

Especially the ones that keep some kind of toy penguin on their desks.

I (almost) felt guilty posting, 'cause I knew you'd say something like
    that. :)

I reckon I'm competent enough, and I ride within my capabilites.

But I ride *well* within my capabilities and those of my bike. Loads of
room for improvement, particularly my cornering.
    Not so far. :-(

Is taking your own bike an option, or do you specifically want a loaner
in case you bin it or something?

    I don't recall it.

I *do* rememeber being stood in the PB office (early 90s) chatting to
Mark Forsyth, and they had the latest batch of 600s, and wondering
what they could do with them, and I suggested they entered them in a
club race. Which they did. The headline was, I think "We've really
    done it this time".

My mate Murff and I went to the PB Donington Frenzy in 1998. There was a
track-day organised for the same weekend and we watched Ronnie Smith
(RIP) and Gus Scott obliterate so many bikes through the Foggy Esses
over the day on a yellow R1100GS.

Neither Murff nor I could believe that something so ugly could do so
well and make sportsbikes look silly. I mean the bike, not Ronnie or
Gus, though that comment could apply to them too.
