thereby proving the adage that the chance of your mobile working is
inversely proportional to your need for it to do so.

I've never used one, so forgive the ignorance but don't they have the
cability to compose a reply offline then?

Almost certainly, but I'd be amazed if one could compose anything by
merely scrolling up and down all the bastard time.

    One Hyde Park.

We're doing work on the initial alignment and leveling of some
structural steel to make sure all the rich arabs don't have wonky
penthouses. It's not something they normally bother with but at the
price this lot are costing I suppose the builders think it's worth
going the extra yard or so.

  10. And the data channel could be carried over the (already existing)
    aircraft Internet connection.

  11. Do they shield the 'Quiet Carrieages' or is it expected that peer
    pressure will do it?
Make nice upside-down sponges with some apples.

one effective solution might be to install faraday cages so that you can't
use your ordinary network provider, put in a train/tube only service that
allows you to use sms but not voice. then people can get important messages
through but not disturb other passengers.

And if people forget to put their phone into silent mode, can we jump up
and down on it as long as we do so quietly?

no. only throw it out of the window.

that would force the bloody train designers to install openable windows in
the train as a nice side effect. they seem to have forgotten that humans
require oxygen to breathe, either that or they're warming up to selling
tanks of oxygenated air on the platforms for extortionate prices.

Come on, be realistic, we're brits.

The worst that happens to anyone using a mobile phone or crappy
earphones in a quiet carriage is they end up on the receiving end of
several very stern stares until one party or the other gets off the
    train.

  19. I remember a memorable journey on a new Virgin train one summer. The
aircon had packed up and there was absolutely no way to open any
    windows..

It was more than tropical. I loved it apart from the humidity (I cope
very well with heat but don't cope at all well with cold..)

    You can't do that.
You must be fair about these things and assault Wogan first.
He's offended far more people for far longer than Vine.
