Just fishing for ideas.... ex gf is coming to visit from overseas and
i've got maybe 7-9 days off work to take her around aus.... Experience
shows her ass will put up with up to 500km on the first day and then
maybe a comfortable 300 every day after. lets say round-trip 2000kms.
She wants to see ocean, desert, mountains and 'the great outback'.
Yikes! She wanted to see the twelve apostles on the south coast, but
that looks pretty far to me. what im thinking is maybe string together
a series of interesting places to make a ride. We'll be camping most
nights in swags and wont be doing any cooking. Any takers?

    Thanks,
    Shaun

That's easy. Do the desert first, take her through the wheatbelt to
Kalgoorlie, stopping on the way at say Merriden, then through Norseman
to Esperance, then along the coast road, back up through the Karri
    forest.

OK, mountains are a bit hard, but big trees will make up for it!

You are in WA aren't you? YOu aren't? How was I to know!

Head over the Blue Mountains towards Broken Hill, Tibooburra? You can
certainly see plenty of red dirt there for the outback experience, and it's
not too far from Vic to do the GOR (apostles) at some stage. Hang on - round
trip 2000km? bugger. Broken Hill is that return from Sydney. I think
Syd-Melbourne return is about 2000 km as well.

Oh well, at least head over the mountains - Bell's Line is a better (funner)
road, and does have some great views, but if you nip across to Mt Vic from
Bell and then back down to Katoomba, you'll be able to see some of the world
famous sites like the Three Sisters. Then head west to Outback, or south
through back country into Vic. Vic has some outback type experiences - Great
Sandy Desert??? (name?) and what's that old dry lake - Mungo?

If you head that direction, you might be able to stretch a little to get the
Great Ocean Road in, but 2000 km isn't going to show her heaps,
    unfortunately.

Sounds like a lap around Victoria. Sea, Mountains, Desert, what more could
    she ask for.

Thanks for all the good advice, at the moment over bells to mt vic is
looking good, and its a road i often take when i go climbing. Then
maybe to Orange... or Dubbo for the western plains zoo? Definitely
have to get some red dust in our shoes and clog up my air filter with
it. Then south via back roads... can you put Kangaroo Valley into a
route like this? We might finish up in victoria, but it does seem like
a lot of riding if you want to take your time and enjoy things. If we
find some nice spots along the way it would be nice to stay a day or
two. I might try and stretch it out and do a little of the great ocean
road, but i think it would be a few too many days on a bike for her.
We might stretch it to two weeks if we stopped at a hotel for a few
days or something. Its nice to do something in return.... I spent a
year living and travelling with her overseas and its good to be able to
    show her something of Australia.

Sorry, i should have mentioned it was Sydney. Lots of good riding in
WA though! and victoria too... actually now that i think about it the
riding isnt all that brilliant here in syd. I just got back from a
year in NZ south island and the riding was pretty impressive over
there. mountain passes everywhere, truly breathtaking views, ocean
roads, 100k/h speed limits on almost all roads, no traffic and very few
cops outside of the cities. the beer was a bit ordinary though.

I'd also consider maybe riding far north, up past bundaberg or
something... stop off at byron, surfers and maybe rent a little
catamaran and sail for a couple of days in the whitsundays. the roads
up there are seem to come in only three varieties though; long, flat
    and straight.
