6 gears or 5?

    Here's my dumb question for the day.

    My K3 SV650 is advertised as being a 6-gear, however I can only count 6 if I
    include neutral.

    However with manual cars the manufacturer doesnt include neutral in their
    gear count.

    I think I must be missing something obvious.

    You're either miscounting, or you've got a bike with a transmission problem.
    The SV650 *definitely* has six gears - one down and five up (not including
    neutral).

    Yeah thats what I was going to say....
    Have you clicked DOWN from neutral to get 1st??? :p

    strange, so to move forward to the next question, say for example i just
    havnt been able to get it into 6th gear, and ive had the bike for 8500kms,
    will this have done any damage, particularly in terms of no running in for
    6th?

    8500 kays and youve never used 6 ?

    maybe they left it out ;)

    to answer the previous posts, yes i always start from 1st, then go up
    through neutral to second, but I only get to 5th. The lever wont budge
    further, so I always assumed 6 speed meant 5 + neutral.

    Im obviously wrong and probably an issue with the bike, however if it's pure
    human error could I have done any damage through not using 6th?

    Cant see that it would do to much in the way of damage.
    But I am very surprised that no-one picked it up when you got the 1000 k
    service done..
    You DID get it done yeah?
    I think I would be going straight back to the shop and getting it checked..

    it's already been in the shop fo rthe last 3 months for some repairs...
    they're ficking hopeless

    yes i did get the 100k service done

    are you, when you leave the lights, counting 5 up movements till it stops
    shifting.

    The jetting can change the final drive ratio, so I assume it can also change
    the no. of gears. Get it tuned correctly and it should be sorted.

    Nope. My guess would be that the shift lever is misadjusted, and
    so can't push far enough to shift into 6th. But I have no idea
    what an SV650s shifter looks like, or if there's anything for it
    to foul on. The XLV quite regularly used to lose 1st if the
    lever fouled the bash plate ... to get to 1st, you have to push
    the lever down a tiny bit more than you do to get to 2nd.
    Probably not, it doesn't get a lot of use on modern bikes anyway!

    You're not simply counting how many gear changes you're making are you? There would be 5 of those on
    a six speed box.

    the error seems to be in the counting
    if you start with first engaged,
    then you have 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 = 5
    if you start from neutral,
    0-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, =6
    which is how it should be done...otherwise you will think one gear is
    missing and go about having a panic and posting questions on NG's and stuff

    if you go down 1 then go 5 up you have hit 6th gear
    are you sure you are counting correctly?
