400/4 Restoration

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by 78 CB 400 Four F2, Jul 23, 2005.

  1. Hi all

Its been a little while since I needed to wealth of knowledge previously
given by the members of this newsgroup. Silence doesn't mean another
restoration concluding in a box of bits on Ebay though, and the lovely
little motor saw daylight for the first time on her own wheels yesterday. I
have updated my webpage with 2 new images and welcome visitors to the site.
    See it here at:
    http://www.artistic.flyer.co.uk/Honda.htm

I won an auction on Ebay for a new Tachometer and then realised that the one
fitted may not have been an original one anyway. The new (NOS) one redlines
at 10,000, whereas the on fitted at this time redlines at 9200rpm. A little
'surf' would suggest that it should have been 10,000.

Does anybody have a contact that can rebuild (to new appearance) a
Speedometer? Or a source of NOS?

Has anybody paid for a DVLA history search, and if so, does it state the
original dealer? I would like a new number plate with the dealers details
if appropriate, and all I know is that it came from a Liverpool based
dealer. "Cundles" does not exist anymore but "Bill Smith" now at Chester
may have been the dealer. There was also a dealer Mike ...... something or
other, any scousers able to shed a light on that one?

    Regards

    Chas

  2. That means it was off a 250. Same unit, lower redline.
There is a place that advertises in the classic magazines. Buy a copy
    and have a look.
    No, afraid not.
    Hailwood & Gould?

    78 CB 400 Four F2 says...
I paid once for details on an RD400F that I restored. Copies of all the
previous V5s with name and address changes were supplied, as well as a
copy of the original form that was filled out by the dealer when the
bike was first registered. From that I was able to tell that the bike
had been registered by Haverhill Motorcycles, who had since ceased
    trading.

I had a new numberplate made up with their details on the bottom, just
for an added air of authenticity.
