4 bike prang in Qld

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Kevin Gleeson, Mar 21, 2005.

  1. Yesterday's Hobart Mercury carried a brief story about a 4 bike
pile-up at an intersection in Qld somewhere. Not much detail but 5
    people injured.

Anyone know the details, coz I was trying to figure out how the hell 4
bikes come together at an intersection, especially hard enough to put
    5 people in hospital?

    Cheers

easy, 2 fast moving bikes overtake a stationary car on a blind corner
and hit 2 bikes coming the other way... ouch!

  3. Is that what happened or are you just offering a possible scenario?

that's how it was reported on the news. the car was waiting to turn
right. to my mind, the guys must have come in way too hot and chosen the
lesser of 2 evils (hit the car or take your chances around the outside).

  10. Only second(third?)-hand info, but it's probably as good as most others:

Group of bikes heading one way pulled out to pass a car, on the right
hand side, that was turning right (yeah - I know - flamin' unbelievable)
and ran into group of motorcycles coming the other way.

One lot (the overtaking mob) was apparently a group of blokes on
sport-bikes (yeah - I know - what has that got to do with it) while the
other mob was a group of Ulyssians from Redland Bay.

Here's what a guy from Redland Ulysses had to say:

This morning a group of 19 Ulysses Club riders (+ pillions) from the
Redlands Branch were riding north towards Maleny on the Stanley
River Road. Two sports bike riders, travelling "very fast", were
seen by most of our group headed south away from Maleny At about 10
km south of Maleny, 4 (possibly 5) bikes were involved in a serious
accident. The Ulysses Group's second last rider and his pillion
wife on a large Yamaha cruiser were side swiped by a red sports
bike. The road was closed shortly after by police who mentioned 4
    bikes involved.

The "tail end charlie" on an Aprilia 1000 on/off road and another
sports bike were also involved. The 3 Ulysses Club members suffered
serious injuries: It is believed these include compound leg and
other fractures; one possibly has a ruptured spleen, and another
with possible head injuries. All three have been transported to
hospitals (2 to Nambour, 1 to RBH). The condition of the 2 sports
bike riders in unknown. There was talk of a fifth bike and possibly
a car waiting to turn right across the paths of the last few Ulysses
    Club riders.

When the sports bike riders passed a number of Ulysses Club riders,
they were on the wrong side on the road (and double white line).
There was some speculation that they may have tried to go around the
waiting car and found the north bound bike s in front of them. I
was the lead bike at the time, and these 2 riders headed south
passed me (on the correct side of the road, flat out – cranked over,
    hanging off their seats.
