Saw an article in this week's MCN where some lunatic paid 32 grand for the
remains of a Brough Superior SS80 which had been destroyed in a fire. The
picture and accompanying text appeared to show that almost nothing
salvageable was left. Can people really be *that* crazy? It defies all
the laws of physics, Jim. What on earth would a healthy Brough fetch,
    ferchrissakes?

<shuffles off, shaking head, hands in pockets, muttering "well I never...">

No, the auction was pulled - at 5K, believe me, that would have been
*mine*!! I was talking to someone a few days ago who has a Vincent that
needs some attention - even that is getting offers of over 40K!

    And....

Only last night I was following another Vincent (owned/ridden by friend
of the guy above, I believe) and it was getting along at a nice, brisk
but very *upright* pace when it went over a bump in the road (bad road
repair joint) - I swear the rider's arse and feet all jumped into the
    air for a moment!!

    In
My dad had a Brough Superior sometime in the early '60s. Malcolm Campbell
(or was it Donald?) was allegedly the original owner.

For some strange and unexplainable reason I wish dear ol' Dad'd kept hold of
    it..

Probably not - or how do they get that sort of money to spend? But
anyway, what better thing than to rescue a poor old dead/neglected thing
and turn it into summat *gorgeous* like those on here:

    Better than scrapping them, surely??

(Thankfully, it seems the Yanks have got the time, money and
*inclination* to keep 'em up to snuff!)

In 1972 the average house price was £7,374 and petrol was 35p a gallon
(about 7.7p per litre) and £25 a week was a good wage. Average house price
is now £184,924 and average petrol price is 92.6p per litre and £500 a week
is a good wage. You paid the equivalent of approximately half a year's
average earnings for for an old Vincent in need of restoration - and back
then it wasn't nearly as much of a sought-after classic as it is now, given
that it was 35 years ago.
