    Hi All,
considering a 4 day ride with my partner sometime in the next month,
any suggestions? havent really done a lot of rides around sydney,
other than blue mountains and the putty.

would love to go somewhere with good roads, average maybe 500km/day?
nice scenery, good places to stay (B&B's are nice) and hopefully
something a bit extra like local produce or something. have never
been south of Sydney, but heard it's nice? prefer someplace not so
    crowded/touristy

    Thanks for any suggestions!

If you go north, you should include the Oxley Highway between Walcha
and Wauchope in your itinerary. Great mountain scenery :)

Do the figure 8, up the new england to walcha, across to port mack via the
oxley, up to grafton via pac hwy, in to glen innes via Gwydiir Hwy, home via
new england, option to redo the oxley. could also hit coffs then head inland
via dorigo, thats a magnificent road (or it was the last time i was there)

That would be Waterfall Way. And yes, it is still very much a
magnificent road - easily one of the best bike roads in the country!
It's also a great place to stop and view the scenery while waiting for
your father to drive up with a new radiator hose for your car...

I did the figure 8 just before easter. Sydney to Armidale via
thunderbolts, Armidale to Brisbane via waterfall way, summerland way and
Mt Lindsey highway. Brisbane to Armidale via Pacific Hwy (Grafton), then
to Glen Innes via Gwydir hwy (excellent bit of road) and then New
England to Armidale. Back to Sydney via Oxley and Pacific Highway.

....and didnt get pinged once ;)

If you're travelling at a moderate pace with the intention of covering
lots of km per day 500km might be quite achievable, but I think for the
time of year you're going with your partner and presumably plan to stop
for coffee/cigarettes/photos/food/gazing in awe at the views, then I
think you might be pushing it a bit, particularly if you intend to
tackle more than just straight roads where you can maintain 100kph. If
you're planning the sorts of roads like Thunderbolts, or Oxley Hwy, or
Waterfall way, you should reduce number of km you expect to cover in a
    day.

You don't want to be on the road later than say 4pm (a. because of the
wildlife and b. because sometimes it's nice to be able to choose your
accommodation in the daylight and have a look around the town or
whatever and not feel like you've spent the entire day on the bike).
Your enjoyment of the ride will be limited if you find you're rushing
all day to make some deadline or reach a particular destination.

If I'm travelling alone, on straight roads, I'd budget for about average
speed of 80kph over the course of the day, including breaks, or about
60kph down twistier roads.. about 10-15kph less if there's someone with
me because stops for fuel/food/whatever invariably take 3 times longer
if there's someone there to talk to. If I were you I'd be aiming for
350km per day, then assessing your route and where you'll stop for the
night at lunchtime or a bit after lunch when you have an idea of how
    you're travelling.

If I were you, head down south along Highway 1. Stop in at Bega, about
425K's on highway 1. Then head up to Wagga Wagga through the snowy
mountains highway (state route 18), about 400k's. You'll need to check
weather before you go, as naturally it snows there. Not sure if it has
this year yet. May might be a bit late? Then Wagga Wagga to Orange or
Bathurst, 300-325K's along the Olympic (41) and Mid Western (24)
Highways , then Bathurst to Sydney on the Great Western (32), 200k's.

Not quite 500k's a day, but some nice roads.

    **** the New England!!
Putty Rd to Singleton, then Dungog, Gloucester and up Thunderbolt's Way to
    Walcha!
Armidale -> Grafton is a great run too.
Then you could take Shadow's Grafton - Glen Innes (another top ride) a short
run down the New England (ptooey) and then back through Walcha to Port
    Macquarie.
From there you may as well just ring a transport company for the bike and
catch a bus home for all the joy you're gonna get from the Pacific Hwy (or
you could head back the Walcha and go home via Thunderbolt's and the Putty
    again!).

Add in the Putty and this is my standard getting-to-Sydney route! (in
    reverse)

Sometimes I forgo the Mt Lindsay Hwy and come down the Gold Coast hinterland
to Murwillumbah and then cut through near Nimbin to link up with the
    Summerland way at Kyogle.

Ill never travel thunderbolts way again, last time i was there it cost me a
40k car(dont go up the scone road sweatheart, you havent been driving long
enough to deal with dirt just yet, 7 hours later she rings from the
gloucester hospital**), most of my sanity, what little was left of it

And i managed to pull walcha to gloucester in 1 hour 10 minutes.

Amazing how fast you can ride when you hear "your sons getting a head
protocol done now to see if he has a fractured skull"

Hit the first patch of dirt spending well over 2 bucks 30

    Never again

    Shadow
(Yes im well aware theyve sealed the bitch now)
** she got herself sliding down a fairly sttep decline, car went sideways on
her, and she paniced<sp?> and buried her foot so hard in the brakes that she
actually bent the pedal when the car speared into a sandstone rockface at
    100km/h
