Damien I think this is your cue to tell the story about how your GPX250
(undoubtedly one of the most desirable and theftworthy bikes in existence) was
stolen from right outside your bedroom window.

well if its a car its about $2600

    bikes well who knows

    stamp duty @ 3%
    rego + CTP

    as a guide in early 03 futant bought a 00 ZX6 with 5K for $9K
    which was a bargain reallly

hence me saying that for $10K you shouldnt have a real lot of trouble
finding something if you look hard enough

someone else recently paid $15K for a new CBR600RR which isnt too bad for
    the latest model

sounds like you need to be screwing your dealer harder (not literally)

so that limits it to 2001+ and I am pretty fussy with the
hasn't been all that easy to find a decent one that I like

I have heard that story. I kept my 250 in same place for the last year and half with no problems. My next door neighbour has a beaut
VFR800 that he keeps out the front of his house (in his driveway) and its been there for the last 2 maybe 3 years with no issues.
The key point is its a dead end street and as such very few people (who dont live in the street) ever pass through.

As I think I mentioned I didn't even attempt to negotiate with the dealer as I plan to buy private. I just wanted a general
    estimate.

I might give some places a call as if I could get to around the $12k mark maybe I'd consider buying new from a dealer but this is
    probably wishful thinking.

Any suggestions of best and cheapest places to consider ?

    Thanks.

a new F4i for $12K thats more than wishful thinking

i think the correct term is ' tell em the're dreamin'

this deal would be for 03 models

do the rounds of the dealers and screw em down on price

The problem is that a) it can use you, as it doesn't take more than a
moment's inattention to find you have just used it and b) have it for a
bit and then you are likely to think "this is easy" and forget to
    respect it.

There's a reason that most crashes occur in the first 6 months of
ownership of a bike according to the Hurt report. It's because you
arent as used to it as you think you are and it bites....

If you are hardly riding it at all, then extend that 6 months by a lot.

IMHO you can get away with that if you're riding a shitter[1] but not
    a $10k sports bike.
5,000km in 1.5 years? Why are you even bothering to upgrade?

    Someone stole the MZ once.

OK, it was in the driveway, with the key in the ignition, but still....

MInd you, they were either kids, drunk, utterly clueless, or some
combination, cos they never got it started. Even rolling it down the
    long hill.

They dropped it once trying to rollstart it, and at the end of 600m of
hill left it against a fence.

It's possible they didn't know what the key was, as maybe they weren't
expecting a nail with a handle. And they might never have seen a petrol
tap that you had to turn on, but still.

Someone stole the MZ once. Since then I've figured there's a thief out
there silly enough to steal *anything*.

Someone tried to steal my old Torana which was parked outside my house waiting
for the insurance assessor to come and look at it and declare it deceased.

Not quite. I once left my Datsun 180B (Wagon, with air. Gee I miss that
car.) out in the street, with the windows down, all the doors and the boot
unlocked, keys in the ignition, and a full tank of petrol. That night,
theives tried and failed to steal the commodore behind it, and did steal the
falcon in front of it. The Dattomobile was there in the morning, just the
    way I left it.

James Mayfield is of the opinion:
But considering what the thefted falcon was used for (a ramraid, for the
curious), what use would the Datto have been?

250's are even cheaper in ACT. Registered my ZZR250 for 12 months for
    $169.85.

I'm rethinking upgrading after the power to weight restriction ends. If I
do upgrade, I think I'll skip the 600cc bracket.

    Up to 300cc $169.85
    301 to 600cc $509.40
    over 600cc $469.45

Given this, are there any bikes available in the 250-299cc range? New?
