I purchased one of these late last year and so did a friend of mine.
We both have approximately 4500km on the clock.

We have both noticed that the bikes are using oil.
We both now have black oil in the sump, instead of the clear stuff that a
    new bike should have.
I mentioned this to the dealer who shrugged it off, like he does.
Admittedly, my girlfriend has levelled the bike, so I couldn't be sure that
I was obtaining a correct reading - I purchased a stand which fixes this.
We will both be contacting the dealer again and asserting that there is a
    problem with the bike.
If this fails, I will be contacting Honda MPE directly to express my
    dissatisfaction.

Has anyone else experienced this ? Or have any suggestions ?
I haven't seen any drops on my garage floor, nor have I noticed any blue
smoke out the back (same goes for my friend).
I know the dealer will attempt to *fluff around* and provide me with an
    indirect answer.
I'd like to have some grounds to make a claim on, but I can't pinpoint what
    the problem might be.

    Thanks.

As in, from new? If so:
    If it's only a bit (<1L / 1000km) that's perfectly normal.
    It's still running in, really.
Perfectly normal too. It is, after all, an internal combustion engine.
Did they give you a trade-in on the girlfriend?
4500km in 3-4 months? They should be contacting you to express
their disappointment that you're not even riding the bastard!

**** I wish I knew as much as you Hatz

oil discolours after a few thousand k's in my experience

yep like my italian bike that uses a bit of oil (about 150ml per 1000ks) but
it doesn't seem to be unusual

I presume you dumped the initial mineral oil at around 1000 klms????
    If not, I'm not surprised.

How much oil is "using oil" in this case? In reality being a modern Japanese
bike I agree, it shouldn't be using oil, none of my Kwaka's have and I don't
think my blade is using oil.

How did you run it in? if you ran it in like an absolute pussy this might be
the cause as the rings may not have bedded in to it's full capacity, but
hey, there's lots of ideas out there about that one too.

I take it you replaced the mineral oil at 1000kays (earlier if you knew what
was good for you) and started using a semi synth from then on?

Yes .. I'm afraid your oil will be black, it is an engine after all. Even
new bikes make oil go black after a while, especially since it's got 3500km
of using the current set of oil.

You need to work out exactly how much oil it's using and then work from
    there.

In the owners manual on the page with the Daily Checklist it probably mentions
something about checking the oil level every day. This is probably an
indication that Honda realise that the bike will use oil. If you tell Honda
that the bike is using oil they will no doubt tell you that engines use oil,
it's in their nature. If it's consuming a large amount of oil (say 1 litre
per 1000km) perhaps you will have some grounds for a complaint. You do
realise that the oil viewer window isn't an indicator of the depth of the
sump, it's just a small percentage of the top of the sump, so even if the oil
level has dropped from the top of the window to the bottom in the course of
3500km that's probably only a couple of hundred ml of oil... maybe 1/2 to 3/4
of a litre per 6000km service interval... hardly worth worrying about IMHO.

  10. Or 32kms, going on what happened on my ride to work the Monday after
changing my oil two weekends ago.

Or 15secs of the bike idling in the garage, going on what happens when I
kick the YZ over after changing its oil (dry sump; can't be sure if you've
put the right amount in without making it pump the oil tank full).

Um hate to dissapoint but even synthetic oil goes black after 1000kms.
What this rider is describing is perfectly normal.
As the engine gets run in it may use a tad less oil but the black will
always occur as a by poroduct.
If the oil remained clear then you would assume the guy never rode it.

  12. Might as well make an effort to get around to it right now... bikes really
appreciate frequent oil changes while they're still, effectively, being run
    in.

I'd say there would be residual oil from before still in the sump and
    the oil pump/filter etc.
Do you change your oil when it's hot?
you tend to get rid of more that way.
the service centres use compressed air to get rid of excess.
I wonder if that's wise sometimes.

  16. And the galleries inside the crank and the cams, the recesses around the
valve buckets in the top end, adsorbed onto the clutch plates, hanging by
    surface tension from the pistons...

Honestly, this "Aaaarrgghh! Honda have sold me a shit bike! The oil's gone
all black inside of only 3500 kays!" panicking outdoes even Sandgroper's
report on the results of rejetting.

I try and change the oil when it's hot, but on the other hand, you often
think .. "hang on, my bike is as hot as it'l get when I get home, so if I
change it tomorrow morn then all the hot oil will have drained out from the
top of the motor etc and be in the sump anyhoo!" ...

I guess it depends on how much crap the oil sticks too when it's just
sitting in the sump, hence my "hmmph, wonder if I can be fucked burning my
hand on the hot oil" debate.
