Having just done 900 miles in a Megane 1.5 diesel, can I say that little
    diesels are great.
Car hire was cheap to begin with - having a car returning 60mpg+ was a nice
    bonus.

Managed to get 80+ for some bits :)

Still, I didn't half wish I had the bike once we actually got where we were
    going :|

Don't you find them soul destroyingly slow and impossible to overtake
    in?

    I found going from a 2.5 V6 petrol car to a 2.2 frustrating, I think my
next car will be a diesel but one of thw 160BHP 1.9 turbo ones, in a
small car.. like the Seat Leon Cupra R.
Double what I get in my 2.2 then.

Not really - to be fair though, I have a motorcycle for being silly on. I
had a passenger,a hire car and little desire to go fast. We spent a week in
Cornwall and frankly some of those roads are tough at 10mph, let alone any
    faster.

I did um.. two overtakes on non-motorway 'real' roads- both through (IMO)
good observation. High power was not required but yes, would have made it
easier. FWIW, advanced bike training in terms of observation works just as
    well in the car ;-)
The fastest car I've yet driven has been a 330i BMW. Haven't got a lot to
    compare with really.
As I said, this was purpose rather then pleasure. If we do ever buy a car,
it'll be with the same in mind.
The bike is my fun, the car will be for purpose and economy. In that respect
I was impressed with the Megane - £12000 car, but it has pretty much
everything in terms of equipment and safety stuff - certainly much better
equipped then say the equivalent price Golf.
Well we were on a tight budget and I have to say I was most pleased when
they handed me the 'card' (no key) to the Renault. Light right foot and we
saved loads on fuel, which could be spent in the pub/cream tea shop.

As an aside though - Cornwall has some cracking roads - I am definitely
going to take the bike down there at some point.

Verdigris left a note on my windscreen which said:
    Hadn't considered that one. Noted.
The only thing which would bother me about buying a pre-customized
streetfighter instead of a 'standard' one is if there would be a
significant increase in insurance premiums for not being standard and if
the modification has not buggered the bike up in any way.
I did think about going for something like the Tiger for sensible
reasons and then I went off the idea for the same reason :)
    That's the general plan ATM.
