Anyone own one or owned one, or have any experience of them? Do they make a
good commuter? Stepping up from a 125 so don't want to go too mental...

So, I bow to the FOAK, opinions, alternatives?

I've got an unfaired 2000 model - my first 'big' bike. It's got a small
tank, its very good for just working without doing any maintenance at all
(not recommended though!), acceleration is scary, top speed is only limited
by your neck muscles (anything over 100 mph just hurts), its stable and
feels solid. Also, a plus point for me, is that its light and doesn't feel
like a monster when you're trying to hold it up.

I think I made a good choice for a first bike, its fast and mental enough
without being an out and out sports bike but being a step up from your bog
    standard commuter.

    Just my opinion.

most Monsters are actually lighter than a 600 Hornet.

I had one for 3 years after a short spell on a scooter. Kept it outside
under a canvass cover, and road it all year round from Kingston to
    Central London.

It's fair to say I wasn't exactly passionate about maintenance (didn't
even know the chain was supposed to be 'lubbed' for 9 months - doh!)
but it never let me down once.

I'd agree with other typical moans - pitiful fuel range and back tyre
is pricey. Longest ride was 3.5 hours in the wet to Plymouth with
backpack and panniers and it was fine.

Build quality superb - but the Fazer that's replaced it is a lot easier
to live with with 200 miles range, fuel gauge etc as well as being a
    lot easier to ride.
