Wind it up to about 140, then clutch in, and stick it neutral, and
hope.

You know, I did that with the Saab once (OK, not 140mph), and then
accidentally hit the cruise control button.

I've never ever seen it rev like that. If it had a rev limiter, it
bounced off it.

 

I take your point and withdraw my assertion.

Having said that, and having been in that position (not exclusively in
France on a Sunday) several times, ITYF that the vocabulary is not
limited to merely "eek".

IME, it includes (usually sotte voce and through gritted teeth,
frequently and increasingly combined with The White Knuckled Grip Of
Death on handlebars/steering wheel) "ohfuckohfuckohfuck", entreaties
such as "Please God let me find fuel and I'll be good for a week",
"whyohwhyoh *fucking* why didn't I fill *all* the way up at the last
stop ... "

Combine the above with alternating hot and cold sweats and buttocks
clenched until they hurt, and I'm sure that you can tell that I know
where you're coming from.

 

My Audi 5 cylinder engine had a really smooth rev limiter that you could
use to spray that white BMW that has been tail gating you with black
shite from your exhaust. Used to speed up peds that were slow at moving
out of the way too.
