Our Ken is basing all his knowledge on the leaflet and box from a 1969
    Airfix model kit.

If you know so much about Triumphs, then why on earth have you fitted
yours with such a shitre exhaust system, and totally crap wheel rims?

Strange that then that they are now regarded as very desirable
collectable classic bikes, which few on here can afford!

Thus spake Roger Hunt () unto the assembled multitudes:
I was in a bar once and there was this really attractive girl standing with
a couple of friends, looking a bit shifty and uncomfortable while she was
talking to them. A minute later she suddenly called out "Cop this one,
then!" and then released the most thunderous postern blast you'd ever
    heard. Priceless.

Whether your solicitor would have been amused if you'd done the same is
    another matter.

    Hmmm. In 1974 I was 18 and had a Lambretta SX200. By 1976 I had a
Triumph Tiger 650. Could I really have transformed from one to t'other in
    so short a time?

    Desireable? No fucking way.

They're collectable only because they are so rare, which can only mean
that out of the many thousands made, only an handful survived because
they didn't last very long. They were and still are absolute shite.
I wouldn't waste my hard earnt money on crap like that. I buy bikes to
ride and get enjoyment from, I really couldn't do that with *anything*
    British.

My boss collects bikes, he had a huge dealership at one time and is very
well known throughout the trade. At our showroom are about 45 classics
and there are loads more stashed here and there around the country. His
collection is made up mainly of classic Japanese and Italian bikes. I
asked why so few Brits and he said they are rubbish and not worth
bothering with in general. At the showroom he does have a Sunbeam S8, an
old Rudge and a brand new Bonneville Jubilee. I asked about the Bonnie
and he said he's never even started it, because Triumphs of that era
were so bad it could blow up as soon as it started. It's the only bike
in the collection that needs an oil drip tray underneath, and it's brand
new. Compared to the Jap bikes from around 1977 the build quality is
    dire to say the least.

You have no idea of who can afford what. It's more down to making
sensible choices, which most here seem to do by avoiding Brit-Shit like
    the plague.

  18. Meriden did go through a rather Mod-ish phase, with the Tina, and worse,
plonking an upturned bath on the back of some of their proper bikes.

Perhaps the nuances remained into the '70s and your transition wasn't so
    painful or so unexpected?
