2 stroke muppetry

Yesterday, we learned the difference between 2 stroke engine oil and engine
oil for a 2 stroke. Yes, you guessed correctly, the reddish stuff that is
supposed to go in the autolube tank ended up in the sump (oh how we
laughed), luckily we had only run the bike up and down the street a few
times. This has now been drained and refilled with the correct oil.

Anyway, we now have a borrowed HBOL so things are a little clearer.
Unfortunately we now have what appears to be a fueling problem, any advice
    would be appreciated:

The carb (this is the TS50 btw) is a Mikuni VM15SH. The problem is that the
bike starts okay, and will run for a few minutes, then refuses to play for a
while before running again. I have 2 theories on this:

    a) when we bought the bike it had been fitted with a loud sports type end
can. We have replaced this with the original. Could it be that the
previous owner (who I do not believe rejetted the carb) merely buggered
about with the settings to get it to run, and we now have to re-bugger about
with them to suit the new end can (and new air filter foam).

    b) in his haste to begin fettling the bike, m'boy and his mate removed the
petrol tank and drained it. There was a lot of crap in the tank, most of
which got shaken out as a browny, petrolly solution. Could it be that this
crap has now entered the carb and blocked up the innards (not to mention the
gauze filter on the fuel tap) and the whole shebang now needs to come off
    and be cleaned and reassembled?.

M'boy asked "how does the carb work". I could only reply that petrol and
air go in it and black magic takes place (which is the extent of my
knowledge of fuel systems), so I am a little daunted by the prospect of
    stripping the bloody thing.

Any help would be much appreciated, as he is now desparate to get out on the
    bike.

  2. Yes. I've had this problem. It's usually a partially blocked fuel tap,
so it uses all the fuel that's in the float bowl, and then has to wait
while the bowl slowly refills from the trickle coming through the tap.

A gunged up carb, as oppoed to fuel tap, usually just runs badly, as
opposed to running nicely for a short while and then stopping.

Check the tap first. Not just the gauze filter, but the pipes that go
into the tank. Strip the whole thing right down.

Cheers for that TOG, it does fit in well with the symptoms. Looks like
another day of my week off is to be spent immersed in petrol and other such
    solventy type stuff.

Wot TOG says plus try running it with the petrol cap off, if it runs for
more than a couple of mins with it off then the breather's blocked in the
    cap.
