    Cheap, huh?

I don't give a shit. Next summer I am gonna catch some rays.

Saw a news program featuring it this evening, they were driving along
interviewing the driver, as if that was not distracting enough, who had a
wire hands free dangling from his ear.

    Can plod do him for intent ? :=}

FFS! But to be fair, that price does include stirring in a generous
dollop of the Holy Blood of Christ.

For the price, it ought to.
It's just in the most popular tourist bit of the town, none of the locals
drink there, just the unaware tourists.
Beer costs about the same for 1/2 litre.

  9. I saw that Gareth Hunt last night on that Stephen Fry's comedy vehicle.

**** me, what happened to him? He looked like somebody's old grandad.

  11. By this time, I'd imagine so. It's obvious he doesn't take himself too
seriously - I can think of quite a few actory types who'd have turned
the spot down through being too po-faced.

So the truck owners don't pay enough in over-inflated road fund fees as
it is? And anyway, if there are any increases in their expenditure to
run the fleets, who ends out paying?

We do, because they incorporate extra charges to cover as it is. One of
our hauliers already had a 4% surcharge included on their bills for
delivering within the city of London before Ken Livingstone got his way.

I remember years ago someone telling me that bikes cause a lot of
damage with the "weight to contact patch" ratio. I'm not a physicist,
so don't know if it's true. But if it is, then surely bikes should pay
    more?

    It's not.

    Volvo V70, 40 passengers - weight approx 2.2 tonnes, contact patch[1]
    approx. 20*10cm= 200, *4 = 800sqcm. Ration of 2.75 kg/sqcm
    Gixxer thou + me (+full tank) - weight approx 260kg, contact patch[1]
    approx 5*15cm=75, *2 = 150sqcm. Ratio of 1.73 kg/sgcm.

    HTH

[1] Obviously very rough estimates, spesh for the bike, but not too
    far out, I suspect.

    Ah, ta for that.

So then, can you explain the physics of sticking in 40 passengers into
your V70? 36 in the ashtray? Suck the water out of them to reduce
    weight? :)

I don't know, but I'm inclined to think not. There's been a fair bit of
resurfacing done in recent years on the M6[1], but there's already two
furrows ploughed in lane 1. Perhaps it's the fault of the road builders
for not making the roads strong enough. Even so, they're the roads for
everyone, so if the vehicle causes the damage why not hike the road
    fund?

    [1] I'm thinking J17 ish.

What about the power output of the engine through the smaller contact
patches, and the grippier tyres that bikes have? I'm not sure it would
make much difference, but if I ride behind a bike I get stones thrown up
at me whereas it seldom happens behind a car.

Eh? How would that work then? Tyre pressures are in no way related to
the downward pressure exerted through the tyres, surely?
