1993 VFR750

    Hi all,

    Want some opinions / experiences of the early VFR750's. There is one
    local going at a reasonable price. I have a VTR1000, great bike, but a
    bit sporty for me. I want a more comfortable commuting bike that I can
    ride and do most jobs. I have a race bike and that keeps me ammused,
    but this is to be something that's a good bike to run all year round.

    Any weak spots? Faults? problems? I've heard some very good things
    about the later model ones, but what about the early ones? Pre-800
    etc.?

  2. Better than the 800s IMHO. The early VFRs were faster than the later
    ones, but not as sophisticated.

    Bluntly, you won't go wrong with any of them. Only one to avoid is the
    very first Pro-Arm one because that had a silly small fuel tank,
    enlarged on subsequent models.

    Biggest prob is corroding exhausts, especially the rear headers, which
    are more easily replaced if you tank the engine out. Oh, and charging
    systems sometimes go tits-up.

    Just to confirm what TOG said...

    The 750 is generally better regarded than the later 800's. Headers +
    collectors can rot and are expensive to replace. The R/R
    (regulator/rectifier) was a regular problem due to over heating - often
    improved with extra heatsinks and/or small 12v computer fans - now
    replaced with much better items with improved heatsinking.

    Other the above a good all rounder, with plenty of low down torque and
    a choice of three gears for almost any bend.

    I ommited to mention that the 94-97 is considered to be the very best
    of the 750's.

    I do like my brother's 750FV (the very last shape 750), but the 800 has
    some useful improvements - like the superb headlamp, fuel injection,
    extended service intervals and, in most circumstances, linked brakes
    (despite what people say, the only time I find them a bit worrying is
    when on downhill gravel strewn roads - especially 2-up - for normal 2-up
    riding they're great as they more or less eliminate dive).

    Harry Bloomfield emerged from their own little world to say
    I owned 2 VFR750 - a 1988 FJ and a 1994 FR. I also test rode one of the
    first 800cc bikes. I agree with HB. The FR to FV version is the best. The
    first incarnation of the 800Fi was horrible in comparison.

    A dubious "improvement" IMHO.

    Worth having
    I thought I'd hate these, but I didn't even notice them when I rode
    Zymurgy's 'Bird. That said, I still don't see the point.

    For me, it works. No carb balancing to worry about.
    As I said, they work very well when carrying a pillion. Probably due to
    lazyness on my part, though.
