    I thought that Suzuki's claim was that they pumped the oil round faster
    and there was more oil than an 'air cooled' bike so the oil was used to
    actively cool rather than just be a lubricant which needed cooling.

    I could of course be succumbing to Suzuki's marketing bollox.

    I think you're right there. VW aircooled engines had pretty large oil
    coolers but were still known as, er, aircooled.

    recently.

    I don't think so. They also reduced significantly the engines finning
    and therefore reliance on the traditional air cooling technique.
    It was different enough in my book for them to legitimately make
    the claim.
