I have been reading in GS Forum about number of gas/vent lines.

Mine seems different. At the front is line between carbs 1 and 2. At the
back, buried really really low between carbs 3 and 4 is another line.

Tank has the overflow drain by the float, and two lines off the petcock
which is marked on, reserve and prime so I though there was supposed to
be a vacuum line to it.

Carbs have 4(?) drain lines but can't see them to verify the numbers.

I am not seeing a vacumm line. It appears the one at the back of the
petcock goes to the back of the back of the carb, and the one at the
front goes to the front of the carb.

After straightening out the wiring and getting a battery, coils and cdi
I did start it but then found that the tank has a leak!

Have I got it wrong or am I not seeing stuff?

  2. when you put the petcock in normal or reserve, gas flows through 1 of the
    lines,
probably the one going to the back of the carb, this is the main supply line
    to the float bowls

when you put the petcock in prime, gas goes through both lines, the main
line to the float bowls and the other line to the front of the carb where it
    primes the carb.

It doesen't sound like there's a vacuum shutoff. A lot of bikes didn't have
    them
    back then.

Yeah, well, there were a lot of model changes between 1883 and 1983...
    ;-)

Go to www.partsfish.com or bikebandit.com and look at the carburetor
    diagram for the 1983 GS650GLD

Item # 68 is the vacuum hose that operates the petcock. It gets vacuum
    downstream of the
butterflies and it has to operate a diaphragm on the back of the
petcock, so it will go to the
    small diameter horizontal connection there.
OK, the overflow from the gas tank would dump overboard unless there is
a connection to the airbox for fumes or a charcoal canister was
included on those models. My 1982 GS-1100 had no charcoal canister but
my 1986 GSXR did. Check the diagrams to see if there was a canister.
The large line would be the fuel line. It would go to a brass spigot
coming out of ONE carburetor at an upward angle so gasoline will flow
into the float bowl. The carbs will be connected by short rubber hoses
    between them.
    Item # 68...
So they either drain gasoline from the float bowls or they are air
    vents for the float bowls

There are air vent hoses that attach to plastic T-fittings between
pairs of carburetors. Look at # 72 on the diagram.
Small hose = vacuum line, larger hose = fuel line.

That's not the half of it. Bike was made 11/82 according to frame plate.
Looking at Bikebandit my air cleaner box though is not from GS650GLD,
but is from GS650MD which is Kanata, and I still need the black plastic
cover for it and the two clips. Filter inserts from right side not from
    the top.

Also carbs are same as MD not GL. GL has multiple Ts at back end for
gas, and mine only has the one.
No cannisters shown. From what I have read they were on California
    models only.
Isn't #72 the gas in ? Like I say looks like the GS650MD so there is
only one gas in and one vacuum and no vents
When I get the leak in tank fixed will fire it up again. Surprized it
started after being primed and sitting who knows how many years. I had
pulled the plugs before doing anything to check spark and they looked
very rich but that was probably because choke rod was binding. Idle was
like 2500 RMP so could be very dirty of have binding cable.

On the GS-650MD. # 70 is the fuel line and # 71 is the vacuum line.
That bank of carbs doesn't seem
to have the complicated venting system that the GS-650GLD has.

Been patching leak in gas tank (a small split and couple of pin holes,
and was using gas resistant body putty compound. Put some gas in and it
leaks still so it's all going have to come off again and be welded I
    guess. YUK

Anyways tank was weeping, not dripping, but in the prime position carbs
#1 and #3 are dripping from the screw on underside in the middle of each
float bowl. I assume that's just supposed to be just a drain so either
it's loose, or there is an o-ring on it thats shot or needs to swell? Or
is it an overflow that has no nipples or hoses on it, and in the prime
it just fills too much? This is the carb unit that looks like it's from
an 83 GS650MD not GS650GLGD as it should be. Don't really want to pull
the carbs if I don't have to.

    Opinions?
