Heh. £55! But yes, the bike will have to be a keeper, I think. It's in
absolutely superb nick, and huge fun to ride when going well, but it's
requiring rather more work than I'd anticipated.....

  3. I had a GS550 with a superdream reg/rect box on it, worked fine. Mind, I
think it had the superdream stator as well. This made the GS550 electrics
    almost reliable.

  8. it did occur to me later that it was probably a typo.

However, The whole description sound as a bit odd. What age is the bike?

I've not come across much with direct headlamp on AC except for very crappy
mopeds and the like, or very old stuff.

even the god-awful 6V CB100N had a DC headlamp, although it solved the power
issues by only using 2 out of 6 alternator coils when the headlamp was off,
and all 6 when it was on, thereby avoiding the need for a regulator as such
    - it just had a rectifier.

  9. Well, it is old. The older 125 singles were all 6v.
*Shrug*. Don't ask me. Electrex had to go away and look up the RS's
details, because they'd never done a unit for one before (it is a rare
bike) and that's what they told me, so I assume that they know best.

Direct lighting on a 12v electrical system is definitely a bit bizarre.

In that case you could have used a rec/reg from a 91-98 CG125 which also has
    AC to headlamp
Which I have to say amazed me when I first encountered one but then the
battery in my watch is almost as big as the one fitted to a CG
    Only £8 on ebay, :(

  11. Is AC to headlamp really that rare? I thought "rev it and watch the
headlamp get brighter" was a symptom of AC to headlight?

Well put it this way, nether mr Lucas or mr Wipac had previously tried that
    particular money saving bodge.
On the CG its only the headlamp that is AC everything else comes off the
    battery.
Except the ign, which is also AC from a separate coil.

No, that's more a symptom of a working charging system :).

  15. quite common on small 6V systems like mopeds and older 125s etc.

Mind, the symptoms (blowing headlamp) seem to point to wrong bulb in that
case - direct lighting systems match the bulb wattage to the charging output
and use the bulb to control voltage, effectively. More'n 12V on the battery
side is a separate problem (regulator, as stated) and shouldn't cause the
headlamp to blow, however running a 25W headlamp in a system meant to use a
    35W one probably will.

  16. Deffo right headlight bulb here - and the 16v recorded by my mutlimeter
across the battery terminals does rather suggest a fecked charging
    system.

The new Electrex unit arrived today. It requires soldering of
connections and the accurate reading of a wiring diagram. I may be busy
    this weekend.

  18. Well, Timo has kindly agreed to lend a hand, as he knows more about
keeping the magic smoke in thn I do.

    Hang about...

    <Slaps forehead>

That means that he's going to... going to... *touch* the bike. I might
    as well junk it now.
