16 tons bright red, howling like a banshee...

  1. Or in this case, probably several hundred tons, a nice grey,
silentish, several metres long and running on tram tracks.

    http://www.howwedrive.com/2009/05/18/traffic-safety-film-of-the-week-11/

A film of a tram passenger's eye view of people who I don't think
could keep a straight face when saying "sorry mate I didn't see you"
as they change lanes into a tram.

Now if those had happened to a motorcycle, it would be because
    "motorcycles are hard to see".

  2. All I could say is that they have one crazy tram driver who should be off
    the road,
he or she is causing incidents everywhere at all times of the day.
Whether it be in Houston or Melbourne, tram drivers are a crazy lot with
only one thing on their mind
and that is to destroy as many cars as possible

if trams were banned then this could never happen. If it saves just
one accident then it's worth it......

  4. Brilliant! Not only do I love the way the tram drivers seem reluctant to stop
but also the number of idiot drivers who want to turn when the lane markings
    clearly indicate that they can't.

I guess the tram driver should have steered around them eh?

It's not reluctance to stop, it's inability to stop. You can
see that even after they hit a car, and are pushing it
sideways up the road, it still takes a pretty fair distance
before the tram comes to a stop.
Personally, I don't understand how people have such a hard
time driving around trams. Compare a Melboring tram to a
Brisvegas bus, and I'll take the tram anyday thanks. See
those two shiny bits of steel up the middle of the road -
well it's a pretty fair bet that the tram is going to be on
them. Stay away from the bits of steel, and you stay away
from the tram - piece of cake.
Brissy buses though will go wherever they want, whenever
they want. Doesn't matter if you are already beside them,
the indicator goes on and they start to move over.

  7. I think that is because the "Give Way"sign on the back
But, I am not sure if they are totally legal
I thought the give way sign was only a courtesy factor

In NSW you have to give way to buses changing lanes both legally and if
    you don't you get squashed.

They do the same here in Melb too, because they have legislated right of
way. Quite possible that the same applies in Brisneyland. Perhaps you
need to re-read the road rules before you get out on the road?

Yep busses have right of way in Brisbane, but when you are riding a bike
everything has right of way, coming back from Lightning Ridge on Sunday 2
emus claimed right of way on me and I let them have it.

Haw! Kangaroos know better than to jump in front of me. Why, just
this morning, one guy had the perfect opportunity to take me out as he
was sitting right next to the road pretending to be a stump (I could
barely see him because of the rain on my visor and the thick fog), and
he *still* jumped the other way when I was about level with him.
Probably figured I was going too slowly and wouldn't get injured
    enough.

  13. Same in Tas. If the indicator is on you must give way, whether they
are pulling out from curb or changing lanes.

I view it as the sign implies "The driver of this vehicle is not legally
required to enter traffic flow safely, nor look in mirrors when pulling
    out from the kerb."

  17. Oddly enough Yeebok, I agree with you on this one, I also view the sign as
    you say.
    ,
I also thought that it was that way when they were first put on the back of
    a bus
It was only a courtesy gesture to allow the bus into a lane of already
    moving traffic,
but, I guess that with the influx of migrants, both legal and illegal
driving a bus now, all those courtesy gestures goout the window

No, it means "you have a duty to give way to this bus. Same as you
have a duty to give way at a give way sign. Get used to it"

    Zebee
    - who hasn't ever had problems with buses moving away from the kerb,
and often gets a wave from them for acknowledging their right of
    weight.
