159MPH isn't speeding then?.....

Absolutely. But in this case he was just driving fast. Not the same
thing at all. If you've ever been out with a police instructor you
    might start to understand this.
Well if you want to be penalised, that's up to you, but I fully
support anyone who's managed to find a legal way of doing such things
on public roads. Good luck to 'em, says I.

Any car chase that got into three figure speeds would surely be called
off by the controlling officer as being too dangerous. So, in real life
he would not be called on to do those speeds on public roads. If a
Police chase got to 84 mph in a 30 zone there should be serious
questions asked of the senior man in the control room.

Fine. I'll tell the Lincs magistrates that I won't be paying the fine for 84
in a 70 on an empty A1 then, because this copper can get away with doing the
same speed in a 30 in a built up area.

I guess the same instructors that have taught the Met plod?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/316105.stm

"Last year, Metropolitan Police officers were involved in 5,500
accidents, six of which involved deaths"

You need to realise the frailty of human beings, just because officers
are trained does'nt mean they exercise restraint and/or common sense or
uses the theoretical skills taught them. If so then they would've been
able to avoid all of those incidents.

5500 in the Met alone, no doubt SWK will be along to advise what the
national statistics are but if the Met are involved in that many
incidents then nationwide it must be a massive problem.
What I would like to see is a common ground, so that if I drive like a
c*nt (and get caught) I get done and if he drives like a c*nt he gets
    done too.

Not a desire to see equality before the law then?

**** it, a pint beckons and the sun has just come out up here, I'm off drink
driving, the cops get off with that too.

A chase at that speed could result in dead suspects instead of suspects
in custody - I suspect the norm would be to call it off long before 159mph.
84 in a 30? come on, no senior officer in the control room would
authorise that if only because their arse would also be on the line if
    anything went wrong.

I know it's all ifs and ands but motorists have been jailed for high
speeds on the basis of "what if it went wrong" so to me it smacks of
hypocracy when Police drivers of Home Secretaries, Chief Constables and
this latest PC get away with it.

It's not about jealousy either, the West Mercia lot are pretty keen on
speed cameras and the speed kills message is pushed quite hard round
here. This judgement hasn't done them any favours really - I believe a
lot of people are thinking about double standards and there is probably
more than one senior officer wishing this bloke had been done.

    Ace says...
    Not daft at all.

Bedfordshire Police have been using the high speed facilities at
Millbrook Proving Ground for decades to train Class 1 drivers in high
speed pursuit situations. It was quite good fun passing cop cars at
130mph whilst giving them the wanker sign out of the window when I
    worked there.

The good thing about this case is that it's been accepted in court that
travelling at 159MPH on public roads doesn't necessarily constitute
    Dangerous Driving.

"What did you think you were doing, sonny?"
"Familiarising myself with the capabilities of my vehicle, Ossifer."

I know a 30 limit where you can easily do 130. I know this because I went
there one Sunday morning and did 130.

I could probably have gone quicker, but there's no point taking the piss, is
    there?

Not at all, that's what the copper was accused of and got away with and
what I originally said up there was that if the chase got to 84 in a 30
then serious questions should be asked.
    Well, ok, but I know
And if I were caught doing it I would expect a ban if not jail.

What about bike units in pursuit of a stolen bike at 3am? Want
There's no such thing in this country as a totally deserted road
anymore, there's always a chance of meeting other traffic at any time of
    day.
Not at all, the point I was trying to make was that his excuse of having
to be prepared to chase at 160 mph or 84 in a 30 zone was pretty bloody
thin. I accept your assertion that they happen but those sort of chases
are very few and far between. High speed "car tests" and
"familiarisation" can be carried out off public roads.

    I haven't achieved it either, but I have done 130, 140, 150 and 160 in the
    appropriate limits(all indicated speeds).

I could quite get my bike up to an indicated 170 on a long, slightly
downhill, stretch of dual carriageway ... it just sat there at ~168 :(

I've also got a 10 limit near to me and I don't think there's enough braking
space at either end of it to get much better than my current best of ~80.
