1300cc Pan handling

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by David Griffith, Aug 30, 2004.

  1. Just wondered if any one else has had a similar problem as I am experiencing
on my new pan. Just moved from a Blackbird. The bike is great just that when
at motorway cruising speeds and above the bike tends to wobble/ flex as you
go along. Having the screen down at times helps as does have the top box
off. I was wondering if any one else had found a decent set up?

    TIA

Having just read this month's Superbike comic, where there's a group test
including the Pan, apparently Honda recommends that speeds be kept below
80mph with the top box fitted. Looks like no long-distance, high-speed
    touring on a Pan then...

I think every manufacturer gives that 80 mph restriction advice. BMW
mention it somewhere in the owners handbook for my K with panniers
and/or top box fitted and I can honestly say that even when at an
indicated 145 mph it is still rock steady.

  4. There was a recall over this - apparently there is some big deal with
ensuring that the engine bolts are torqued to an exact figure and done
in a special order - maybe yours hasn't been done?

Makes nice holes in the sump too, when they aren't put back properly.

Wot he said. Quite specific it is well.
Also I think whilst the recall was on, they were shoring-up the engine sump
(oil pan to some!), coz it was paper thin and failed easily. The tester from
some rag lost the contents of his engine on the road somewhere IIRC.

  7. They did change the design of the sump - it had short 'legs' cast onto
it to stand the engine on when it's out of the frame. If they got
whacked (going down a kerb for example) they broke through into the
sump and all the oil came out.

The MCN long term test bike was affected when the tosser rode over some
lumps of 2X2 in the road, they shot up off the wheel and did for the
    sump.

    That's the story I remember.
