My brother is after a 125 to piddle around on over the summer. He's
riding on a CBT so must be restricted.

He's ridden before so not a complete newbie but he's tall, 6'3", so we
reckoned that a crosser would be the best bet rather than CG/SR type
    stuff.

Any recommendations? Budget is 1k max.

Yeah so did I. But there's a difference between using a school's SR
for a week on a course and buying one to ride over a summer for fun.

That's exactly what he had in mind. I thought I'd ask here though
because I know bugger all about different crosser models.
    That's a given. Ta.

A DT125 is a trailbike, not a crosser. Crossers are competition bikes,
and the vast majority (probably >99%) aren't road registered & don't
have lights/speedo/horn etc etc. But you knew that didn't you... :)

    What difference does that make?

"It meks it fastur dunnit?, thass wot R meens, it meens race."

The above is a paraphrased snippet from a (loud) conversation twixt two
Burberry clad buffoons in Leeds. The spelling is from my own imaginations
as to how they would attempt to spell, could they even grasp a pen, let
alone the concept of written communication.

    I hope you killed them.
Not really, no. All DTs are & always have been trail/enduro bikes,
regardless of engine size or model suffixes, with the exception of the
50 Supermotard. They've never been MX bikes ('crossers') - even the
ones with MX in the model name.

Which is what I did. I even rode it off-road once. Not much grip with
road tyres though and I fell off after a few minutes. I think I sold it
for more than I paid for it as well.

Would that I could and not get sentenced to Armley.

Sadly, I'll probably end up CBTing the little fuckers.
Look, its simple. You know that, I know that, but enduro doesn't have the
same cachet as motocross to a gloid.

Oh aye. It's just I don't know what the various models are. I
basically said "4 stroke and Jap" to him.

All DTs were road legal - the 'R' has nothing to do with it.

He won't be off-roading. He's going for a full licence ultimately but
doesn't want to do DAS because he won't be able to afford a big bike
till next year. So the plan is to use his CBT, buy a 125, run around
on it during the summer and then test in the autumn.

Then buy a big-ish bike in the Spring 06. He's got all the kit
already so we both reckon the 800 quid on a 125 and ride for 6 months
is a better bet than 500 quid on DAS and a long wait.

I think (and quite reasonably so), it's because he simply doesn't want
a little bog standard commuter bike. Likewise, he doesn't want a 125
race rep because for his budget they'll all be shite. So trail bike
    it is.
