1200GS, V-Strom etc

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Anonymous Loser, Apr 29, 2007.

  1. As my days of trying to grind down footpegs on
the Spur are pretty much behind me, and having
plans of some decent touring, the litre class
sportsbike might have become a less than ideal
mount. With this in mind, one wanders the bike
    shops and considers what's next...

I'm leaning towards something along the lines of
the 1200GS or V-Strom. Not a dirt bike as such,
but something that will handle roads like the Omeo
highway better than the ZX-9 I'm currently on...

The KTM 950 looks like bucket loads of fun,
but may not be such an ideal proposition for
longer highway stretches. The Tiger, Multistrada,
TDM all seem 100% asphalt oriented, and probably
no better in the rough stuff than what I'm on now.
I'd prefer a bit more grunt than the 650GS or Pegaso.

There's the best part of $10k price difference between
the GS and the Strom - is the BMW really that much
better? Or does anyone have any other suggestions
    or opinions???

    Cheers,
    A.L.

All depends on HOW MUCH dirt your going to ride on. Bear in mind the big
beemer only comes with a 19 front which can be a bit of of a drama when
    navigating in the loose stuff.
With lots of rough loose dirt you will need a 21" front wheel to be happy.
With mostly bitumen you can`t beat the R12GS.

    cheers

Check http://www.advrider.com/forums/ for endless discussions on that
topic, plenty of fluff but also a lot of good points raised.
After 4 years of Strom I'm biased, just finished building the last one of
    those two http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225533 ,
which leaves a perfect K3-1000 for sale.
If touring's the game, I'll rather have 2 Stroms for the price of one GS12
    (or a Strom and a DR650 :))
    cheers
