Hi all, I just got a great 96 bandit with only 12000kms on it. The rear
shock is already stuffed. On max preload and still soft. What is the go with
these? I dont want to spend 1500 on a new unit but would love to make it
    better.
Maybe just needs a stronger spring .
Is the front worth rebuilding as well? Has adjusters but feels ordinary.
thanks for any advice or ideas.

A GSX-R1100 shock is a straight swap for one of them.

The earlier model GXSR (84 model IIRC) will fit either from a 1100 or a
750 the 1100 shock will raise the rear end a bit.
    I have a 750 GSXR in my 97.
My front suspension has been worked ,but I'm not sure what was done ,the
previous owner didn't say, but it's much firmer than my 98 model
    susupension.

The Bandit standard shocks are rebuildable but with the GSXR shock you
    get the extra adjustments.

Umm it may not be stuffed, the Bandit came out of the factory fairly
    soft and squidgy
Not quite as simple as that. The GSXR 11 models differed in their shocks
across the years. IIRC (and it's dubious) it was the 92-96 GSXR11 that
was almost the same (about 1 or 2 mm longer I think).

Go to the Ohlins website and look up the part number for the Bandit12
and then look up the GSXR11's until you find a match is probably the
    quickest.

  6. I've just gotten the rear shock on the FJR rebuilt (upgraded). Cost
about $400. For that, I got upgraded rear spring (250 kg payload), and
shock reconditioned with fully synthetic oil, and upgraded shims and
    valves etc.

I would imagine that most cities would have a rebuilder capable of
    delivering similar results.

On the old K100, I replaced the standard rear shock with a 2nd hand
Ohlins (3 way adjustable) for $500. Made a helluva difference to
handling. 18 months later, I had the shock rebuilt (wear'n'tear, plus
larger pillioning requirements) for another $500. Made it better than
ever. Was a good way of spreading out the cost, rather than an initial
outlay of $1300 on a new Ohlins.

I replaced the spring and had the rear shock rebuilt with an added
remote reservoir with adjumstents, gold valves and new springs on the
    front end.

Made a _huge_ difference to the handling.

A remote reservoir WITHOUT adjumstents woulda' been a waste of time!

Not so... the purpose of a remote reservoir on a shock absorber is to
totally seperate the oil so that fade doesn't occur as fast.

You _could_ have a pre-adjusted remote reservoir shock with fixed
    damping settings.

  10. But how much more for an adjumstable one?

Normal stents wouldn't've been adequate; I definitely needed adjumstents.

I'm sure I've been wooshed here... but to be honest (is that allowed on
usenet?) I have no idea why! [1]

[1] Maybe I should just give in, admit to senility, and buy a BMW

    Hey!

It's not senility, the weirdness kicks in long before that.

    Only in some cases.

Generally, the incidence of "weirdness" increases with advancing years.

Anyway, now I think about it, Geoff already has a Guzzi, isn't it?

Some have to achieve weirdness. Guzzi riders get it delivered with
    the keys.

Yes a V11 LeMans... which on the Guzzi scale of weirdness is 'dead
normal'... not however I strongly suspect on the 'normal motorcyclist
    scale of weirdness' though :)
