It's a good ride for solo, but for two-up, I'd have the DL1000.

That's it. A google image search finds 100s of them, as you describe,
but also shows a few turned into cafe racers:

I never realised they were the same. Somehow the later ones, with
spoked (and drum-braked) wheels and much more polished engine bits
manages to look incredibly gay, whereas the earlier ones, especially
    in the black/red like this
    http://www.2tausend1.de/motors/normal/Yamaha-SR500-1978.jpg, with the
black cast wheels look much more purposeful and rugged.

  6. I liked mine, though I will concede that some of the specials that have
been built on the Continent (and elsewhere) turn it into something
    really rather fine.

Aye, it's a nice one, and not at all gay. Note the non-standard
wheels, brakes, seat, top yoke and bars. In fact, it's only the engine
and frame that look original (and possibly some of the wiring).

I didn't really mean to denigrate the SR. It's probably as good a big
single as has ever come out of japan. It's just that they're quite an
    acquired/specialist taste.

Orange? Are you sure? They did a red one (which might have faded)
and a brown one, but not orange, afaik.

    Bear says...
I have a spare GPZ500 caliper here, in good nick but without pads.
There's also a variety of master cylinders and levers with hoses in a
box. Platy is welcome to take what he needs for a donation to Team
    UKRM's funds.

  16. That is very true. They're not fast, quite primitive, and spartanly
    equipped. But they are fun.

  17. Mine was deffo orange. They also did a blue, I think, but ICBW - and the
later ones had hydraulic front brakes.

  19. That's quite a clever use of paint IMHO. The tank is utterly stock, but
the angled graphic makes it look totally different.

    SR500, a bit rubbish
I always liked mine while I had it. And a lot less bits used to fall off it
when I slid it down the road (compared to the current one)
