I'm in two minds about the front brake. It's fine once I'm used to it -
great for cornering, and no-one ever lost the front end on the brakes on a
Z200 - but a bit more effectiveness would be nice. I could try to improve
it, but that way lies madness: front-end swaps, Harrison billet 6-pots etc,
and then I'd have to put a decent tyre on, too...
**** 'em. Buyer's market. Sorted now, anyway.

    Champ says...
Better than cable drum brakes. I nearly ran into the back of Platy while
braking for a downhill hairpin on the Furt run.

There's a yawning gulf between possible and the remotest edge of reasonable.

I've been going through a mental process over the last year or so, trying to
pin down my ideal, all-in-one, touring/commuting/back-roads-lunacy etc
motorcycle, and so far it's looking like a slightly larger Z200 (with
    various improvements)...

As did sweller, whilst rubber-necking in Idar-Oberstein, reportedly.

Please note that at no time did I actually have the back wheel off the deck.

That's how it starts. You end up with a WSB front end, and CG125 from the
    headstock back...
Indeed. XBR/GB500, Nuovo Falcone, SR500, SRX600, MZ Silver Star, RE 350/500
    etc.

    Help me...

XBR is an old man's bike.
Nuovo Falcone - too shite, even for a Guzzi.
    SR500, a bit rubbish
SRX600, I actually really like the look of these
    MZ - oh please.
RE - no idea, oh, Royal Enfield?

Actually, it's a wonderful, robust old chugger with bags of character. But
it's a touch steady, and a sympathetic sportification would mean a lot of
    work.
They race them on the continent, lots of tuning kit available. Retro café
    racer look easily achievable.
Me too, but I've reservations about it being too biased to the sporty side.
    Perfectly good Rotax-engined retro single.
Yup. Problem is, I'd have to rebuild it from the ground up, and it wouldn't
do anything that the Z200 doesn't do already.

What, like three extra cylinders. And that's just a start. Seriously,
you _know_ what you really want is a gixxer thou...

    Isn't that what he's got?

Except the cylinders have slipped and shrunk and it grew a sidecar? ;-)

Problem is, by the time I'd got it just right, it would look just like
another black T3 with rearsets etc. People would think we were lovers.

I meant in a "smells of wee" way - Auvache had one, FFS.
    Looks horrible.
really? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong SR500.
    side.

Well, the SRX is /definitely/ a cafe racer in style, if nothing else.
    break down a lot?

Probably not. The original SR500 was "a bit rubbish", but then it did
come out in the late 70s. For some reason the Euros [1] really took
to it, and their cafe racers bear little resemblance to the original
    bike

[1] istr Tom the Kraut riding one on an extended BOTAFOT, where he
comprehensively lost Wreckferret who was on a ZX6R, showing that
riding ability can easily compensate for 20 years of technical
    advances and 60 extra horsepower.

Oh, OK - the SR500 I'm thinking off looks a bit like a fat version of
the moder modern SR250, with the sort of cruiser-style slanting tank,
and otherwise looks like a UJM?
absolutely. Not that I'm claiming "riding ability".
