For some reason the west-bound M4 between J44 & J43 is populated by
cars that are travelling at between 30 - 40mph - I see this every
evening on my way home - I just cannot work out why they should be
    travelling so slowly.

Does your definition of a "posh" car change annualy with the rate of
    inflation?

  3. It might be a good move to actually find out what state the railways
were in when they were nationalised in 1948. They were on the verge of
bankruptcy after WW2 and wouldn't have survived much longer.

I suspect (but don't have a clue) that some of the others you quote
might well have been in the same sorry state.

The size of the steel industry today is?

.... and if you'd care to name a UK owned vehicle manufacturer - that has an
output of more than a couple of hundred cars per year?

Your original point was that viable businesses were snapped up by the
state and screwed over. Now you appear to be blaming the failure of
    non-viable businesses on the state.

    Make your mind up.

No I stated the fact that socialist politics destroyed UK industry through
    the mechanism of nationalisation.

Because I can go and buy shares in bits of it if I want.

That pretty much tells me that they're not nationalised.

The railways weren't profitable before 1948, as Steve Fitzgerald says.

You say this as if the objective were to "cripple them financially",
etc. You can't really mean this. Unless you're really stupid.

But who remains the MAJOR shareholder? I tell you, Network Rail is a
nationalised utility. If not technically, in practice.

In what? There are a number of different, public listed companies
involved. That specifically makes it *not* a nationalised industry.
Bollocks. It's a private industry with a lot of regulation around it.
Quite rightly, because if it goes to shit, the nation is in trouble.

I don't know what your problem is. I suspect you lost money on the
    Railtrack -> Network Rail issue.

I didn't. Made a nice little return by selling the shares as soon as I
    was able.

    Kindly stop talking bollocks.

Try reading some basic information rather than the fiction in the Sun or
    whatever rag you indulge in.

    From http://www.networkrail.co.uk/companyinformation/index.htm

    It reads,
    "Corporate governance
Network Rail is a company limited by guarantee. This means that, while we
are a private organisation and operate as a commercial business, we have no
shareholders. Instead we are accountable to members, who do not receive
dividends or share capital. They have similar rights to those of
shareholders in a public company, except they have no financial or economic
interest in Network Rail. This means they have a duty to act in the best
interests of the company without personal bias.

All of Network Rail's profits are reinvested into maintaining and upgrading
the rail infrastructure. By operating in this way, we create a safe and
    efficient rail network for everyone."

Yet made money at the industry and nations expense. RT was incompetent
and slipshod. A property company that didn't have a clue, or wish to,
    about its primary business.

In attempting to blackmail the Transport Minister into propping up its
share price after being culpable in a number of accidents and the
collapse of the train service, both freight and passengers, it was
inefficient and incompetent and a new management team was brought in with
    a new remit.

Unfortunately for the company, other private train operating companies
and the country the cracks can't just be wall papered over. The whole
system is almost beyond repair. Certainly the task ahead is of a far
    greater magnitude than first envisaged.

Socialist politics _saved_ UK industry and acted as a life support
system until a capitalist government was in a position to cut their
    losses.
