1 less speed camera

One of the Speed cameras on the infamous Spit Hill (biggest revenue raising
street in Australia) was removed today. Something to do with confusion as to
whether it's considered one or two offences if caught by both cameras (about
    200m apart).
The powers that be decided to remove it and the world is now an ever so
    slightly better place. Hooray.

  2. About fecking time too, this means I don't have to slow to 40 kph to
go past it in some sort of hope I won't be wallet raped.

That cam was the one that cost me two fines for 60 kph marked as 71 kph.
After trying the scam again in recent months, guess they have learnt the
    public won't wear that shite.

For those that don't know, folk in Manly/Fairlight/Balgowlah etc are
wallet raped either through tolls, land tax, or cams all the time.
Not a cheap place to live, and we still have to put up with the
1940s piece of shite known as the "Spit Bridge"

  3. I've kept below 60 kph going up and down Spit hill for several years now and
    I've been okay.....

Don't forget, they've only removed ONE of the three (?) revenue raisers.....

  4. Me thinks you missed the point. The cameras were set up over specific
times to trigger a 71kph reading for a motor vehicle @ 60 kph.

I might be stupid, but not stupid enough to speed past a speed
camera, so you can take that as a data point that corruption
    does exist.

I rode down there the last time I was in Sydney. How stupid do you have
    to be
Read the post. 'Caught' him at 71kph when he was doing 60.

  8. Nev, I'd seriously consider you do some background research on the
Spit speed cameras, and into why one of them is being removed (sort
of as rare as a Maccas closing down).

And, I don't have a wife, and not sure at all why it would be
    relevant if I did.

That camera is going on the F3 they mentioned. It is currently a 90km/h
    section.

Not particularly stupid. Those particular cameras have been the
subject of much wrath over the years. If numerous stories in the
media are to be believed, they've been carefully calibrated to
to "mark with chalk, cut with an axe" standard. A number of
gummint buses, for example, were 'caught' travelling up Spit
Hill at circa seventy km/h. Drivers were absolutely adamant that
it wasn't technically possible to make their buses go that
    quick.

While hardly scientific research, a tabloid TV program recently
got out there in an unloaded regulation gummint bus with a
regulation gummint driver, pointed said bus and driver up the hill
and 'gassed it'. The bloody thing barely cracked 40Km/h.

Put a lot of punters on one of those buses and there's no way in
hell they'd come close to the speed limit.

The noise in the tabloid TV brought a lot of other punters out
of the woodwork. All kinds of folks driving vehicles that had
not a hope in hell of sprinting up that hill at 60Km/h were
    producing "lots fo tickets".

Generally speaking, going back for more would require stupidity,
but in this instance, something about the setup of those three
cameras apparently obviated the requirement for stupidity as a
    contributing factor.

Do you have a source for that? I'd certainly like to see it.

Me. The Vic Gov't increased their revenue by $128 last October when they
clocked me at 104 in a 100 zone. I was guilty, and still feel bad about it.

Punters don't weigh much. 16 to the tonne, 64 people would only be four
    tonnes and a full bus.

And an extra 4 tonne isn't going to slow down the bus up a hill?

Sure it is, because they put in the smallest, cheapest engine they can find.

I wonder if they're going to recalibrate it or just leave it at it's current
    settings? <grin>
