That's a completely different issue, though.

I can see their point - if, in any conflict situation, France lost the
Charles de Gaulle - or if it was in for refit / maintenance - they'd be
massively disadvantaged. Mind you it's not like France have a record of
standing up and fighting, it is....

The Falklands taught the MOD a bloody valuable lesson about aircraft
carriers - they believed we didn't need them at all, but we'd never have
got the Falklands back without them. (Even then, we were a bit
over-stretched 'cos we didn't really have anything that could really be
    considered a proper carrier).

  3. We have that here in Spain as well. "Wealth tax" is payable on all one's
worldy wealth. If you own a shed in Mongolia you have to declare it and
pay tax on its value. Bonkers.

  5. Interesting that the frogs and the spics refuse to call the euro cent by
it's proper name. Centimes and céntimos. I pointed this out to a friend
recently and he'd never even noticed that it had a name.

Ffs you people, with 35 mill, you *are* the rich.
I even made a point of saying most places are worse, are you people hard
of reading? But if money were no object, yep, I'd be gone like a shot
to a better climate, a better standard of living, and if I could manage
it, better looking birds (not hard),

"Excuse me Mr Millionaire, we're are you moving to?"

"Well me lad, can't beat good old blighty for cheep beer, good living
and slappers up to yer arm pits".

Nope, I might come back and visit once in a while, but that's it.

I have some sympathy for this view. However, your philanthropy plays
straight into the hands of the Treasury. Whilst you salve the problems of
the homeless or ill, they can cut public spending to finance their grand
    narrative...

I didn't know that the treasury supported the Cave Rescue Organisation
    or local mountain rescue groups.

I'd be more inclined to hand my dosh out to groups that I've had some
connection with or ones that survive solely on public contributions.
It'd be nice to build a new wing on a hospital but my warped sense of
values tells me I'm already paying towards one so **** it.

It certainly supports the latter. Aren't many of the helicopter lifts done
    by the RAF & RN?

All the helicopter rescue work is done by the RAF or RN but the actual
groups are manned by volunteers and the equipment used by them is
either self funded or given to them by local shops etc.

I know when I was a member of a cave rescue group that our funding
came from collection boxes in shops etc and the local caving clubs. If
I minced any of my equipment on a rescue then it was my problem and
    nobody elses.

    have to come for that.

The cost of the air lift and subsequent NHS care is going to outweigh all
other costs by a significant factor, no?

Ignoring the cost to the taxpayer for someone elses leisure pursuits,
have a read through the incident reports for this year and you'll see
that the CRO do a lot more than just drag tired cavers out of caves.
Incidents 17, 20, 21 & 25 are fairly typical of the type of thing
volunteers get dragged out of their homes for.

  19. Heh, no, but I'd be looking for an institute that would look after me
somewhat better than Lloyds/ABN/Wells Fargo do.

Especially given we're talking the UK lottery, which would mean Lloyds.
I'd put the money in and then take it back out again just to make them
cry. Again. They got pretty upset over 40k in cash, I'd love to see the
    palpitations over 35m.

They only need the one CV, Steve. The plan is that in the event of
hostilities, they sail CdG into the combat zone and then quickly paint
it white to make the biggest white flag ever!
