Been to the dealers for some parts prices. It needs -

    All four new vales £120
    2 new tensioners & gaskets £80
    Head gasket £20

I'm gonna do the job myself, I might do all the labour intensive shit like
taking it to bits & get my spannerman to fettle the valves & the shims etc.

Have i missed anything out thats obvious to those that know better?

Depends on how hard the valves got whacked.
It might be wise to change the piston and big end shells.

How much damage can you see on the top of he piston ?
Shock loads can do strange damage to almost anything including the gearbox.
Check for stretch in the primary chain etc.

No, but you can hear it pretty well. I'm not ordering anything until i whip
the head off, but my mates just had exactly the same thing the day after me
    & thats all his needed.

    We'll see.

They can only be hit as hard as the laws of physics allow. They can't be hit
any harder on my bike than my mates bike. He reckons he did the same sort of
time as me with it clattering, about 20 seconds at the most.

Primary chain? Did Honda ever use them?

    What damaged the valves?
Did the valves come into an contact with the head at an odd angle?
Has the piston taken a twatting?
    Piston broke?
Little end still round with no flat spot?
Big end still round with no flat spot?
Crank Ok, not cracked due to explosive detonation of valve heads?
    Cam chains Ok?

This fucking list could go on and on.

And who's to say your mates valves were hit by a piston moving at the same
    speed as yours were hit?

One engine can dink a valve and simply bend the stem and yet another (same)
engine can hit a valve, snap the head off and chew the **** to pieces using
all the nice metally bits inside the engine as teeth. Or to put it another
    way "Physics my arse"
I'd be interested to know how long your pals engine lasts after it's been
    "rebuilt" if that's the case.

  8. Any man who utters the words "whip the head off" has my full support because
there's nothing much better than taking a dead engine to bits and then
reviving it. Go Nige - if I lived nearer I'd be round with a crate, cheering
    you on!

Christ, you're grumpy today, and your glass is half empty.

He might get lucky, if he just does the top end and doesn't inspect
    the bottom.

But, looking on the bright side, the more new parts he buys for my
bike, (when he finds it's totally fucked), the better :)

    Carry on Nige ... !

    Mardy old **** isn't he? :)

Makle me an offer for the bike as it is, with new tryes, chain etc.

If it's anything like my old TL or current Aprilia, both pots will
have comletely independent valve trains. Well, almost completely in
the case of the TL. I doubt both would've failed at exactly the same
    instant.

  19. Valve guides, quite possibly. If it's bent the valves, it may have
damaged the guides. And the piston crown.

I'd also be very surprised if there aren't a few O-rings or seals to be
    replaced as well.

When my Husky 510 'dropped a valve' the head of the valve came off and
damaged the piston and the cylinder liner. They were well known for it
though and revving the tits off it down to the hollow at Gurston
courtesy of the lightened flywheel, combined with a worn out cam chain
and a fluffed gear change was just too much provocation.

Luckily the head wasn't too badly damaged. As you say, easy enough to
check. I might be inclined to at least check the cam chain length
against spec. if that can be obtained. No point putting a clapped out
    chain back on.
